Christmas Mini Sessions | 2018

Christmas time is just the best.
Christmas mini sessions are just the best!

I’ve done Christmas minis at the Richman Arboretum for three years now, and my heart has fallen in love with the tradition. Aside from the fact that this particular location holds an extremely special place in my heart, I quite frankly believe that every single square inch of this barn is sprinkled in magic.

Actually, the entire holiday season is magical. I think we forget how blessed we are to celebrate holidays. Have you ever thought about that?! God gave us the gift of Christmas and in return, we get to celebrate the gift of Jesus every. single. year! Christmas is truly the most incredible celebration!

Christmas mini sessions were truly a celebration this year! So many new faces — so many growing families. So many laughs, so many snuggles. SO MANY HUGS!
So much precious.

Cotton Field Mini Sessions | 2018

Cotton field mini sessions.
My vision for these has been a year in the making. Last year, I was shooting an engagement session in western Kansas and we passed a cotton field on the highway. I quickly called my clients and asked them to turn around, pull over on the side of the highway— and into the cotton field we went.

At first, I wasn’t sure how these would go over. With Christmas mini sessions already advertised— I was a little unsure of the timing. But if you know me, you know my view on timing.
I talk about it all the time. I believe in timing.

So, I went with it.
And it was wonderful.

Sunflower Mini Sessions | 2018

Sunflower mini sessions. Oh, my heart.

The universe always aligns in the most majestic of ways for sunflower mini sessions. Last year, we were blanketed with a week of 70-degree weather at the beginning of August right as the flowers started to open.

Branting-6.jpg

This year, with the unbearable heat and unusual rains, the flowers bloomed nearly three weeks earlier than the farmer had originally predicted.  At first, this caught me off guard.
And then I had to laugh.

Pedigo-29.jpg

In my world, the sunflowers were right on time. The fields literally started blooming in the middle of an extremely difficult time for me. Again. Another dose of darkness and fear; heartache and pain. But the sunflowers bloomed. Early. Of course they did.

Blubaugh-8.jpg

I wasn't ready. But, they were. Bright and tall, full and open. Those flowers drug me out of my darkness, into the light, and surrounded me with some of the most extraordinary people I have ever met. My precious clients.

They don't know it but, my clients saved me a few weeks ago.
In the most unpredictable and beautiful of ways, photography always saves me.

It was a record year for sunflower minis.
93 children. 86 adults. 5 evenings. 4 fields. 73 hours of work.
One completely humbled, thankful heart.

JACY + EAIN

Jacy and Eain. Where do I even begin?

Lubbers-3.jpg

Being around them is easy. It's bright. It's simple. It's intentional. It's fun.
I was in love with their wedding day (before it even happened) for so many reasons. Eain and Jacy truly wanted to celebrate their love and that is precisely what they did.
All. Day. Long.
They went to their favorite bar. They ate their favorite tapas. They listened to their favorite songs. They danced with their favorite people. They celebrated in their favorite city.

Cole + Laura

It's a bit ironic that as I sit down to blog Laura and Cole's wedding, I am at the three month mark from their special day! Looking back on their gallery, I remember the day vividly; fully.

Younger-19.jpg

I remember it because it was absolutely beautiful in every single way. April 28th was truly the perfect day.
Every detail of Laura and Cole's wedding was intentionally planned for and fervently prayed for.

Laura is an extraordinarily creative, gentle spirit.

There was not a dry eye in the room as she put on her perfect dress, as she prepared to marry her perfect husband. It really is special to be behind-the-scenes and capture all of the moments that take place on a wedding day.

Mother's Day

This would have been my first Mother's Day. In fact, I would have been officially 3 weeks away from my May 31st due date, but God had other plans. I've spent the last five months since our miscarriage really paying attention to what it is that I admire about the mothers I am surrounded by. It's really special to watch my clients, my friends, love their littles while journeying through motherhood.

Dryden-7.jpg

I thought at first it would be extremely difficult for me to host these mini sessions.
I am so ready to be a mother; Will and I are so ready to be parents. Our hearts are still healing.
But, one thing I have learned through times of trial is that we must always give thanks for the blessings we do have; for the love that surrounds us.
For the hope God gives us, even when it's hard to see.

Moore-45.jpg
Perry-17.jpg

I am so thankful that God has given me the provision to still be able to see the beauty through our loss. Seeing is believing, and I see the miracle of motherhood through the lives of my clients on a weekly basis.

I see the bonds.

I see the answered prayers.

This year, I chose to celebrate the women in my life who have given me strength, hope, and belief in the future of my family simply by showing up and sharing theirs with me.

Not every motherhood journey is the same, and that is the true beauty of it all.
Cheers to the hardworking, selfless, talented, compassionate and relentless mothers. In all that you do, just know that there is someone watching-- someone learning-- and someone certainly admiring. From the bottom of my heart, Happy Mother's Day!

Dave + Alysia

Okay, these two.

DavidAlysia-9.jpg
DavidAlysia-11.jpg

They're the kind of couple that makes you want to love harder.
They make you want to love simply & honestly & purposefully.

DavidAlysia-19.jpg

Dave and Alysia have a certain light about them; their joy is contagious. It's as if their hearts are actually smiling, too.

at home

Sometimes when you meet people, you just know that you'll be forever friends. You'll be the kind of friends who pray for each other 1,800 miles apart. You'll have the kind of friendship where tears flow at the departure gate no matter the airport. The kind of friendship where you walk together, through life, in two completely different parts of the country, because it's genuine. You'll inspire each other. You'll teach each other. You'll love each other's babies. You'll celebrate the small things hundreds of miles apart.

Young-7.jpg
Young-1.jpg

Dan and Brenna are those friends to us. Our friendship started by meeting in St. Louis three summers ago at a tiny cafe where Dan prayed over our first lunch together. And then it was shared recipes and a love for all things Lululemon. And then Will and Dan qualified for their first trip together and all of a sudden we met up in the middle of Barcelona and traveled Spain, France, and Italy together. And then our friendship grew. And it kept growing. And all of a sudden it was a picture of a sonogram and prayers for Brenna's pregnancy. And it was a trip across the Canadian border to hold Decker for 3 hours while he was six weeks old. And now it's a "how-can-I-pray-for-you-today" text message in the middle of a breakdown. And it's helping each other find the perfect pair of jeans. And it's "you're-on-my-heart-today" and it's support and it's encouragement and it's everything.
It's friendship.

Young-34.jpg

Back in February, we flew out to Olympia, Washington to visit them and catch up with Decker. We met him when he was just six weeks old, so we were really excited to see him again. We drank delicious wine, spent time with Brenna's sweet family, explored Olympia, and squeezed in as many snuggles with Decker as we could!

Young-48.jpg

It was really special to watch Dan and Brenna with Decker. I was amazed (but not surprised!) at how much grace Brenna has carried as she has transitioned into motherhood. It was fun to watch Dan tote Decky's carseat around and make him laugh.
It was so cool to see them as parents!

Decker is joy. He is sweet and easygoing.
He is sooo easy to love!

We had the best time visiting, exploring, drinking, laughing, cooking, and dreaming together. Friendship just does that. It sprinkles blessings into the everyday, it gives depth to simplicity.
Friendship takes you home, no matter where you are.
